Our History
In March of 2010, a dozen theatre artists gathered in the basement of Tangine (then on Ninth Avenue) to read and discuss exciting and bold plays. We began with writers like Clifford Odets, Elmer Rice, Lynn Nottage, and Alan Ball; but before long we honored requests to read new works. An extraordinary energy grew as we worked alongside writers to bring their words to life, and explore themes and questions of their work in passionate discussions. Our group grew into a collective of artists--producers, directors, writers, actors, designers and literary enthusiasts--as we devoted ourselves to the development of new works.
In 2011 we moved from the basement of Tangine to an office space in midtown and named ourselves The Drawing Board. We clarified our mission - to work with writers for both the stage and screen to help develop new works by offering table reads, feedback sessions, workshops and staged readings. We proudly produced our first staged reading at The Players in April 2012.
After an office relocation in 2018, we moved from month to month to a number of locations while we searched for a new place to hang our hat. Luckily we've found ourselves in a beautiful conference room in midtown. Then COVID-19 hit.
We can't wait to get back into a room together in 2022!
Welcome to The Drawing Board...where it all begins.
